I found this too restrictive back then and moved on to singer songwriting on my acoustic guitar, experimenting with open tunings, finger picking and guitar effects. I dabbed around with the synths of the eighties and started using computers for sequencing and sound design. In my adolescence I moved on to teaching myself steel string guitar and had vocal training. I’ve taken formal music training during most of my childhood: music theory, dictation, arrangement, harmony, ensemble, classical guitar and a bit of piano. Just turning the Eigenharp on without running EigenD results in a lifeless instrument that simply does nothing.īefore digging into the rest of the review, let me take a brief moment to talk you about my experience as a musician so that you have some idea where I’m coming from. EigenD also configures the Eigenharp’s keys and controllers by sending a model of their behavior and interactions to the instrument itself.
Inside EigenD, everything benefits from the full expressiveness of the Eigenharp in all its detail, with some caveats as I’ll explain later. EigenD is required to use the Eigenharp and has to be seen as an inherent part of the instrument that happens to be virtual and outside its physical body.
That being said, Eigenlabs recognized the limitations of existing protocols like MIDI and developed the standalone EigenD software to exchange data in very high resolution with the Eigenharp itself. Being limited by the power of an embedded sound module during all this time would obviously be a shame.
Since the Eigenharp is an instrument that is very deep and versatile, you can easily be playing it for the rest of your life, like a guitar or a piano. The power of the software is closely tied to the power of the hardware that it runs on and computers evolve rapidly, doubling their performance every couple of years. While Eigenlabs could have combined both inside one shell and embedded a chip, they purposely didn’t. The Eigenharp as a wholeĮvery Eigenharp has to be seen as two parts that intimately work together: the physical instrument that you play and the software that runs on a computer to generate the sound. Many things were different and now that I’ve actually bought my own personal Alpha and sent the review model back, I clearly see how much better the final version is, even though I already found the prototype amazing. The instrument that I had at my disposal was the final prototype before the actual production models that are being sold now. During this time I worked closely with Eigenlabs and related all my gripes and pain points so that they could be improved upon, and they have! This has allowed me to write this review from the point of view of a musician that has already spent quite some effort on it. I’ve been playing it every day, discovering the instrument and working on my technique. the past three months, Eigenlabs has loaned me an Eigenharp Alpha. You can also decide if you want to record by velocity or by note. The recording window allows you adjust all the recording parameters in real time: thresholds, pre-recording, post-recording, recording limit, recording pause. Recording: With SAMPLIT, you are in control. You can add or remove a velocity, select or deselect a note, listen to any sample, erase a sample that you don't like. Anything that you do has an immediate visual impact. Interface: The main window gives you a clear view of your current project. All the operations on samples are non destructives. For example you can record a piano in 96/24 and create a nice 96/24 piano in Kontakt format and a lighter 44/16 piano in soundfont format.
Quality: SAMPLIT uses the ASIO driver on PC and the CoreAudio driver on MAC.Supported sampling rates: 44.1, 48, 96 kHz (depending on your audio card)Supported bit resolutions: 16, 24, 32 bits (depending on your audio card)You can always convert to a lower sample rate and bit resolution. Samplit sends the midi notes to the midi hardware, records all the individual sounds and create ready-to-play Sampler instruments with a few mouse clicks.įormats: SAMPLIT currently supports 9 sampler formats: Everything is here: automated recording, naming, truncating, compression, normalization, looping, resampling and even playing. SAMPLIT is the ultimate solution for sampling your midi and real instruments. 1843 KB CDXtract Samplit Audio Multimedia Design
